Candle Care 101: 3 Easy Tips to Prevent Tunneling & Make Your Candle Last Longer

Drop your lighters right now! 🛑

Did you just spend your hard-earned money on a beautiful scented candle, only for it to tunnel straight down the middle after just two burns? Looking at all that wasted wax clinging to the sides of the jar is honestly heartbreaking. 💔

To be completely honest, don't feel bad if this is happening to you. Before I actually studied candle making and professional candle care, every single candle I owned ended up with a massive, deep tunnel. I used to think I just got a bad batch!

But everything changed once I dove into the science of wax and started crafting my own handcrafted soy wax candles right here in Fraser Valley (BC, Canada). 🍁

Now, every single candle I burn stays perfectly flat, smooth, and zero wax goes to waste. As a local BC candle maker, I want to save you from my past mistakes. Whether you bought your candle from a luxury global brand or a local indie shop, here are 3 golden rules of candle care you need to save immediately! 👇

1️⃣ The First Burn is Crucial (No Quickies!) ⏳

  • The Mistake: Lighting your candle for 10 minutes just to get a quick whiff of scent, then blowing it out.

  • The Science: Wax has a "memory." The first burn must last at least 2 hours, or until the entire top layer of wax has melted into a full, even liquid pool from edge to edge.

  • Pro-Tip: This is especially true for natural soy wax candles. Soy wax has a lower melting point and burns beautifully clean, but it absolutely requires that first full melt pool. If you blow it out too early, it will only burn straight down that initial narrow ring every single time, causing the dreaded "tunneling."

2️⃣ Trim That Wick! ✂️

  • The Mistake: Lighting a long, mushroom-shaped wick over and over again.

  • The Science: Always trim your wick to about 1/4 inch (5mm) before EVERY single burn.

  • The Consequence: A long wick creates a wild, oversized, and unstable flame. Not only does this cause nasty black soot that stains your beautiful jar, but it also creates a burnt, smoky smell instead of releasing your lovely fragrance.

3️⃣ Stop Blowing Them Out! 💨

  • The Mistake: Blowing the flame out like it's a birthday cake.

  • The Science: Use a candle snuffer, or use a wick dipper to gently push the wick into the melted wax pool to extinguish it, then straighten it back up.

  • The Consequence: Blowing it out produces a massive cloud of acrid white smoke. It completely ruins the cozy, clean-burning aroma you just spent hours building up in your room!

🛠️ Pro-Tip for Existing Tunnels:

If your candle is already tunneled, don't throw it away! 【The Foil Method】: Wrap aluminum foil around the top edge of your candle jar like a dome, leaving a small hole in the center (like a chimney). Light it—the foil will trap the heat, melt that stubborn edge wax, and reset your candle to a perfectly flat surface!

At the end of the day, burning candles beautifully isn't a superpower—it's just a habit. From a candle newbie to an expert, you can do it too!
